Exhibition of the Three Gorges Museum’s New Year Picture Collections

The New Year picture originates from ancient primitive religious worship, with door-god being its rudiment. It developed into an independent painting style in Song Dynasty and reached its peak in Ming and Qing Dynasties. Featuring vivid artistic images, humorous & romantic styles, as well as popular yet elegant touches, it adopts various techniques of expression, including realism, moral and homonym; and boasts a sea of topics , among which are statues of Celestial Beings, classic and historical allusions, drama stories, historical figures, animals and flowers, secular lives, to name just a few. Applying a variety of crafts (mainly falling into two categories: woodblock printing and hand painting), the New Year picture painting is a shining star in the treasure house of Chinese art.
